Jim & Dill

The Legend of Weed N' Stiff

For the first time in the band’s history, Weed N’ Stiff have released an adventure video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

NOTE: A second ROM labeled "Mapper 2" is now included. Only use this version for emulators that don't support Mapper 30 (i.e. Delta)

Join the adventure! Jim Weed and Dill Stiff have been kidnapped by the jealous Joe Bobson, leader of the rival band Moo Cow. You’ll have to battle your way through the seaside, mountains, caves, and snow to save the Weed N’ Stiff boys! Along the way, a cast of characters from the Weed N’ Stiff universe will help you on your quest. Sort of. At least there’s a lot of WS references and even some of the band’s music in glorious 8-bit.

Pretty good game, but I got stuck at this part - is he supposed to have dialogue or trigger a fight?  I'm not sure what I'm missing:

(+1)

yes to both of those things. You can’t talk to him?

Nope, I got totally stuck there.  I'm playing on an NES using an N8 Pro.  I made a savestate on the cart, I'm not sure how/if the game has battery save.  If it does, I can see what happens when I start it up tonight.

I'll report back later tonight (like 10-12 hours from now) and let you know what I can find.  I can send the savestate and battery save files as well, if you'd like.

Interesting. I’m aware of a glitch that won’t trigger the fight if you spam the buttons during the dialogue (which I’m in the process of fixing), but to get around that, all you have to do is just talk to him again and you’re good to go.

…But I’ve never heard of the dialogue just failing to trigger altogether! That’s a new one. I’ll dig into it and see what I can find.

in the interest of finishing the game, what happens if you kill yourself on the spikes?

I'll get back to you when I get some time tonight.

I tried spamming [A] inputs all over around/on the Bobson sprite and couldn't trigger dialogue.  Dying in the spikes didn't fix it.

If you ever want somebody to break a game in new and creative ways, I'm your guy 🤣

I'm gonna go live on Twitch in a bit, I'm a super quiet channel, so feel free to drop in if you're around.  We can try some stuff and see if we can figure out how I managed to break it so well - I have the same username over there, I don't want to come off as trying to shamelessly plug my stream lol.  I can also send you my Everdrive saves, I'm not sure how universal they are, though.

I went back several savestates.  The earliest one I have in the castle has one key, and I was about to get the key off the right-hand side, and even at that point the dialogue was broken.  One save back from that was at the "weird room".  If I restore from there I'm able to clear the castle and get the dialogue no problem... so I honestly have no idea what I did to break it.  I tried a few things and couldn't replicate the issue...  I really want to figure this out now 🤣

Either way, I was able to beat the game.  The first time I got the bad ending, but decided to load state to get the good ending first b/c I had NO idea where the game was going the other way.  The bad ending is hilarious.  Was there any point to the Lizards?

haha, apparently being able to break games is valuable!

Yeah actually… if you get all the lizards (5, I think?)  you’ll be able to talk to the guy outside the castle by the gate. He’ll let you in the back door and you’ll end up in the hallway with the key/skeleton (skipping the first half of the castle)

there’s also a weird passage to get straight to the castle from the beginning of the game, but you won’t have a weapon (unless you get the taser before going to the passage)

And there’s a way to go straight from Rocktown to the mountain cave (skipping the snow)

Really cool game! Great music and graphics. I think I got soft locked in the graveyard section but the games pretty short so it wasn't too bad getting back. Can't wait to play the sequel when I can :D

thank you so much! That’s weird about the graveyard… I’ve not heard of that glitch before. Not sure what could’ve caused it.

Physical copies of 1 and 2 are available for preorder at premiumeditiongames.com

the 3rd game is coming soon (prequel), if you enjoyed these:

Will it play on retro pi??

(+1)

it should! As long as the NES emulator supports mapper 30.

Jim Weed = God amongst men

looks fun and awesome! will try it out!

You can play these on a real NES too! Here are 2 ways:

1. If you're just using a SD card, use the EverDrive N8 cartridge and put the card in it!

2. If you're using a SD card and a CF card, put the SD card in the recommended CF card, then put in the CF card in the PowerPak!
